Gulfport names HOF Class for 2016

The Gulfport Sports Hall of Fame announced 11 inductees for the class of 2016 on Wednesday.

Sidney Coleman, Tony Davis, Rhonda Hawthorne, Greg Holmes, Joe Jenkins, Matt Luke, Mary Mills, Doc Rhodes, Robert Russell, Cedric Tillman and Steve Williams comprise the Class of 2016.

An award ceremony and banquet will be held at 6 p.m. on June 11 at Lyman Community Center.

Gulfport Sports Hall of Fame committee Vice President Prince Jones is pleased with the city's third class.

"This year's class is no different from the first two," Jones said. "Whenever you're picking talented athletes from Gulfport, you can't go wrong. Gulfport has great athletes to choose from."

Here's a brief look at the inductees:

Sidney Coleman: Harrison Central graduate who played at Southern Miss spent five NFL seasons with Tampa Bay and Arizona.

Tony Davis: Gulfport graduate was track All-American at Alabama, won four SEC gold medals in the 800 meter dash.

Rhonda Hawthorne: All-American basketball player at Harrison Central, winning three state titles and played at LSU.

Greg Holmes: Coached Harrison Central for 11 seasons, winning four state titles. 1988 team went 40-0. Had a 365-48 record at Harrison Central.

Joe Jenkins: played football, basketball and track at Gulfport. Starter on 1979 basketball team that went 27-0. Played 1984 with the CFL's Edmonton Eskimos.

Matt Luke: played football and baseball at Gulfport. Played four seasons at Ole Miss, named team captain in 1998. Sun Herald football player of the year in 1994.

Mary Mills: Legendary standout golfer at Gulfport. Played on the LPGA tour in the 1960s, winning three Major Championships.

Doc Rhodes: St. Stanislaus and Southern Miss graduate. 1970 National Powerlifting champion. Set world and national lifting records in multiple weight classes.

Robert Russell: MVP of 1967 Gulfport basketball that went 32-3 and won the Big Eight Championship, Team MVP.

Cedric Tillman: Gulfport football standout who earned state championships in basketball and track. One of the 50 greatest players at Alcorn State. Played four NFL seasons with Denver and Jacksonville.

Steve Williams: Standout football player at Gulfport with 16 career interceptions. Two year starter at Jackson State and member of three SWAC Championship teams.
