On the biggest stage, Stone High's Peyton Phillips came through for the Tomcats to earn the nod for Sun Herald Boys Player of the Week. On the girl's side, Savannah Jones continued to lead the Lady Yellow Jackets to big wins to earn the honor.
There was almost no room for error in Stone High's run to the school's first boys Class 5A soccer championship the past couple of weeks as the Tomcats won by one goal in each of their first three playoff matches.
Saturday was no different as Phillips lifted the Tomcats in the second overtime period with a back-door goal. Mason Hunt made a run down the left side and crossed a perfect pass across the Germantown defense. Phillips crashed the back side and hammered the ball home for what ended up being a 2-1 victory.
Jones has been among the Coast's leaders all season. With two big games last week, Jones didn't disappoint. The South Alabama signee scored 24 points with seven rebounds and three assists in No. 1 St. Martin's 63-60 win over Hattiesburg. She followed it up by helping to knock off No. 2 West Harrison, 51-50, with an 18-point, 11-rebound performance.
