Rebounding boosts War Eagles past Warriors

PASCAGOULA-- Wayne County dominated the boards in overtime to pull away from D'Iberville 57-50 in the Pascagoula Chevron Classic Saturday at Pascagoula High School.

The War Eagles (14-5) grabbed eight of nine possible overtime rebounds to go on a 12-5 run. Six of Wayne County's first nine overtime points came off offensive rebounds, with Marques Powe scoring twice off putbacks.

"It's hard to win when you get outrebounded," said Warriors coach Lorenzo Wright. "Rebounding was the difference."

Wayne County coach Kendrick Davis felt the War Eagles were more fresh in overtime.

"We have a really good conditioning program," Davis said. "I think our conditioning showed in overtime."

D'Iberville's Zach Scales hit a long 3-pointer with 31 seconds left to play to tie the game at 45-45, sending the game to overtime.

"It's not a bad loss for us," Wright said. "We got to play a top team in Class 5A in a playoff atmosphere. This is good for us."

Powe and William Gaines scored 12 points each for Wayne County. Reggie Stewart added 11 points for the War Eagles.

Scales had 18 points for the Warriors (16-4). Evan Howard added 14.
