Quiet week keeps Sun Herald polls relatively unchanged
Due to the holiday break, there were only a handful of games played last week.
As a result, the Sun Herald's boys and girls top 10s remained relatively unchanged.
No. 6 Pass Christian (8-4) switched spots with No. 7 Hancock (9-5) after defeating Pearl River Central and St. Stanislaus during the quiet week.
The top six teams remained the same in the girls poll, with No. 7 Bay High (8-5) jumping two spots after up-ending top-ranked St. Martin (13-2).
No. 8 Picayune (11-2) and No. 9 Pearl River Central (9-4) slipped one and two spots respectively.
In some of the bigger action on the Coast last week, No. 2 Gulfport boys (10-5) and No. 6 Gulfport girls (9-6) swept Gautier 63-41 and 58-13 respectively. The No. 4 D'Iberville Warriors (11-2) topped No. 10 Moss Point (4-6) 66-58.
Hardwood heating up
Last week was quiet on the hardwood, but the same certainly can't be said for this week with multiple tournaments underway.
Gulfport hosts its annual Hardwood Holiday Classic through Wednesday. Harrison Central, St. Martin, Pascagoula, Biloxi, Madison Central, West Harrison and Metamora (Ill.) join the host Admirals with the championship game set for 7:30 p.m. Wednesday.
Vancleave's Paul Wallace Classic also runs through Wednesday, with St. Patrick, East Central, Stone County, Long Beach and Forrest County AHS all participating. The boys and girls championship games will be at 6 and 4:30 p.m. Wednesday.
The Picayune Holiday Tournament is a two-day affair that wraps up Tuesday. Pearl River Central, Poplarville and West Harrison's girls will all compete in the tournament, as will Bay High, St. Stanislaus and PRC's boys. While the girls will play a set four-game schedule, the boys bracket will have a championship game at 7 p.m. Wednesday.
Bay High also hosts a two-day tournament that runs through Tuesday. The games are set to run from 9:30 a.m. unitl 8 p.m. both days, with Ocean Springs, Biloxi, D'Iberville, Lawrence County, Harrison Central, Brandon, St. Martin, Wayne County, Tupelo, Pass Christian, Pascagoula, and Gautier among the participants.
