D'Iberville nets rare basketball win over Biloxi

BILOXI - Zach Scales scored 30 points as D'Iberville beat Biloxi 66-62 in the Jackie Laird Tournament on Saturday at the Biloxi Sports Arena.

The win was only the second for the Warriors (10-2) over the Indians in D'Iberville basketball history.

Biloxi's four losses on the season have each been close, with all four losses coming by a combined nine points.

With the game tied at 62 each, Biloxi missed a 3-pointer with Shamond Hoye getting the rebound for the Warriors. Hoye got the ball to Scales who found Jay Jasper heading down the right side of the court. Jasper headed for the basket and found only Marques McGee in front of the basket for Biloxi (8-4).

Jasper put up a lay-up, with McGee appeared to block with 20 seconds left in the game. However, McGee was called for goal tending to give D'Iberville a 64-62 lead. Hoye would seal the game with four seconds left following another missed Indians 3-pointer with two free throws.

"It's a huge win for us," said D'Iberville coach Lorenzo Wright. "We are, maybe, coming into our own this year. We are playing pretty good basketball this year."

Indians could not find a solution to the Warriors' 1-3-1 second half zone. Biloxi managed only 9-of-35 shooting from the field in the second half.

"We settled for jump shots tonight," Indians coach Seber Windham said. "D'Iberville stayed in the zone for the second half and we got cold. And, we settled for jump shots. You have to get some layups. Scales dominated the game from the first quarter through the fourth quarter. It felt like he scored 50 tonight. We couldn't stay in front of him."

Murphy 74, Harrison Central 73: Sheldon Crawford scored his third basket down the stretch with less than 10 seconds left in the game to give Murphy a 74-70 lead. Although Biscuit Floyd would respond with a 3-pointer in the closing seconds for the Red Rebels, it would not be enough. Floyd scored 11 of the Rebels' 14 fourth-quarter points and finished with a game-high 25 points. Dajon Whitworth added 15 points. Dayquan Perkins added 13 points for Harrison Central (5-7). Neil Farrell paced Murphy with 23 points.

Moss Point 71, Oak Grove 58: David Evans led Moss Point with 21 points, and Brown added 20. Williams contributed 12 points and Antwain Lucky scored 10 points for the Tigers.

However, Charles Hartfield scored 11 of his 23 points in the third quarter for Oak Grove as they cut the Tigers lead to three late in the period. Moss Point rallied and held off the Warriors.

"Any time you build a big lead, it's difficult to hang onto," said Moss Point coach Tony Woody. "In the third quarter, when they cut it to three, we found a way to make a stand."
