West Harrison split two games at Callaway
JACKSON -- Ameshya Williams set the tone early and often for West Harrison.
It started from the opening tip.
Behind Williams' double-double the Lady Hurricanes held off a late Provine rally to defeat the Lady Rams 39-33 at the Callaway Tip-Off Classic on Saturday afternoon.
Williams recorded a game-high 28 points, grabbed 15 rebounds, had three assists and three block shots to lead the Lady Hurricanes (1-0).
"I started off kind of slow, but once the tempo was there I could start playing my game," Williams said. "We had great start, but in the second half we kept turning the ball over and we can't do that."
In the fourth quarter, West Harrison built a 35-21 lead midway through but Provine went on a 10-2 run to cut the lead to 37-31 with just under three minutes left.
"We are a young team this year," said West Harrison coach Otis Gates. "Ameshya did what she had to do to win us the ball game."
"This type of game was to put us in a different than on the coast," Gates added. "We have some growing up to do. Made a lot of mistakes in the second half that helped Provine get back in the game."
Elexis Peyton had 14 points to lead Provine, while Jakia Harper added 10 points for the Lady Rams (0-1).
Provine 61, West Harrison 32: Provine got off to a fast start and never looked back.
The Rams (1-0) were up at one point 40-13 in the third quarter and were led by Chauncey Buckner's 16 points. Eddie Galloway added 15 points, while Enrique Milton added 12 points.
Gabriel Butler had 13 points to lead West Harrison (0-1).
"They came out hitting shots and were ready to play," said West Harrison coach Milton Ray. "We didn't rebound well, shoot the ball well and couldn't get into any of our sets cause we were rushing too much. We wanted to see where we stand cause Provine is the best team in 5A this year."
