Overman leads St. Martin to 49-14 victory over Biloxi

Special to the Sun Herald

ST. MARTIN -- Wayne Overman ran for three touchdowns and passed for a fourth as St. Martin beat Biloxi 49-14 in Mississippi High School Region 6A-4 football Friday.

The win keeps St. Martin (8-1, 3-1) in the hunt for a home playoff game with a game at Region unbeaten Ocean Springs (7-1, 4-0) next week. Ocean Springs and Gulfport (6-2, 4-0), which beat the Yellow Jackets 28-10 Sept. 25, will meet in two weeks on Oct. 30.

The loss probably closes the book on any faint hopes Biloxi (3-5, 0-4) had on making the playoffs this year as five of the eight teams in the region have two or more wins.

Overman scored on runs of 1-yard and 2-yards in the first half before ripping off a 75 yard run early in the fourth quarter to put the Yellow Jackets up 42-7.

"It's a big accomplishment," Overman said of St. Martin beating Biloxi, which now has a four-game losing streak. "But every game we win is a big accomplishment."

Eddie Whitehead, mindful of next week's game, also downplayed the win over the Indians.

"It's big," Whitehead said of the win over Biloxi, "but we have Ocean Springs next week and they are a very good team."

Overman finished with 158 yards on 15 carries to bring his season total to 784 yards on just 96 carries. He also was 11-of-15 passing for 121 yards, an interception, and 13-yard touchdown pass to Kalem Reddix to open the scoring. Reddix caught three passes for 56 yards.

Tyler Polk displayed his versatility, running 57 yards on 12 carries, catching two passes for 29 yards, and connecting on 2-of-3 passes for 48 yards, including a 35-yard screen pass to Ham McGee.

Led by Quincy Brown and Chance Seymour, who were involved in eight stops each, and Kelvin Chestang, who had five stops from his defensive end position, the Yellow Jackets defense held the Biloxi runningback duo of Zech Bracket and De'angelo Mayers to 70 yards on 19 carries. Biloxi would manage only 130 yards of total offense on the night.

The Yellow Jackets also forced six Biloxi fumbles. Although the Indians would recover four of the fumbles, Dante Starks swatted down a Biloxi option pitch and rumbled 26 yards for the game's final score. Isaac Williams also scored for St. Martin, hitting pay dirt on a 3-yard run with the opening play of the fourth quarter.

Tim Jones would lead Biloxi with five of the team's six catches for 64 yards and both touchdowns. Jones' first scoring reception came after Jiles Bradfield picked off Overman's pass to give Biloxi the ball at the Yellow Jackets 21. After a defensive holding penalty, Brodie King connected with Jones on a 10-yard pass play, the first reception for Biloxi on the night. Jones' second touchdown came off Trey Shaffer's 4-yard pass with 3:40 left to play for the game's final score.
