The difference 30 seconds can make.
Pass Christian turned a teetering nine-point second half lead into a 24-point advantage in just half a minute to propel itself to a 52-32 first round win over South Pike in the 4A playoffs.
The Pirates set a school record for points in a postseason game and secured their first 10-win season on five total touchdowns from quarterback Paris Trivillion, four takeaways and a whirlwind third quarter.
South Pike had the football midway through the third and had an opportunity to dig further into Pass Christian’s 29-20 lead after scoring just a couple of minutes prior.
But standout receiver and defensive back Dwight Thomas picked off Eagles quarterback Dondra Turner and returned it to the one-yard line where Trivillion scored from on the following play.
Moments later linebacker Cecil Lazana knifed into the backfield and knocked the ball free from Turner’s hands for Stefen King Jr to fall on. Trivillion found Larkin Lewis deep over the middle for a 38-yard score on the next play.
“Our defense does that every week, and that’s how we win games,” Trivillion said. “Leaning on our defense, getting turnovers and capitalizing on them.”
Defense and special teams played a major role in the Pirates’ runaway victory with three fumble recoveries, an interception, a first quarter safety and Lewis’ second half-opening kick return touchdown.
“That unit has got good chemistry,” Pass Christian coach Jeff Stockstill said. “Those guys work well together. They communicate in practice, and they make an effort to correct mistakes.”
Stockstill called Lewis’ kick return score the single biggest play of the Pirates’ season. The senior wide out had a three touchdown night against an athletic Eagles defense that had a clear advantage in size and length.
South Pike edge rusher and tight end Micah Nickerson wreaked havoc across both sides of the line of scrimmage. The 6-foot-5 Missouri commit — who began his week with an offer from Ole Miss — had multiple pressures and tackles for loss on defense and hauled in a 25-yard touchdown in double coverage on the final play of the first half.
“We knew this was going to be the biggest, fastest, most physical team we’ve seen all year and it showed,” Stockstill said. “They broke some tackles. They made some plays that we normally don’t give up. But I think resiliency and perseverance was what we learned tonight. I feel fortunate getting away from these guys. There were some athletes on that team.”
South Pike found itself a four-seed despite its talent thanks to a Region 3-4A stocked with South State favorite Columbia, 9-1 McComb and a Poplarville team led by Mr 4A Ty Keys.
But the challenge was one the Pirates wanted and needed to have.
“It was a good test for us, we haven’t faced a team like this all year,” Trivillion said. “Getting this win is just more experience, and it’s on to the next week.”
The Region 4 champs will host Morton in what will be the school’s second-ever second round home game.
The Pirates hope to have a number of areas cleaned up before then, despite what the 50-spot may suggest.
“I think if we can still win by three scores and play sloppy it’s a good night for us,” Stockstill said. “But, obviously, we can’t give up 30 points next week.”
