South Mississippi finishes 2-for-3 in volleyball state championship matches

George County couldn’t hold the Gators’ dynasty.

The Lady Rebels were set aside in straight sets by Lake Cormorant in the 6A title game, ending a historical run for the program that saw George County earn a South State championship.

Lake Cormorant fought off multiple Rebels rallies across the first two sets, but won each 25-17. George County pushed again in the third and was within two at one point, trailing just 18-16.

The Gators would pull away again and take the final set, 25-21, to capture their fourth straight championship. All four have come against Mississippi Coast teams and with a combined set advantage of 12-1.

George County ends its season with a 30-13 record.

The Coast did produce two champions in Clinton, this week.

Ocean Springs had come up short on its first two trips to the final match in 2012 and 2024, but not on its third try. The Greyhounds swept Madison Central in Clinton to claim their first golden volleyball as 7A champions.

It’s sweet vengeance after falling one set shy a year ago. Ocean Springs used a 12-0 run to spur a dominant 25-10 opening set win. The Greyhounds took set two 25-16 and pulled away in the final frame, 25-18.

Sophomore Alden St. Amant was honored with MVP of the match. Ocean Springs closes out the year with 40 wins under coach Christina Daigle.

The Greyhounds were the second Coast team to win a title Thursday at A.E. Coliseum.

Our Lady Academy captured its 18th state championship and sealed a four-peat with a sweep of Alcorn Central in the 3A title match at Clinton Thursday.

The Crescents cruised to early set wins with 25-12 and 25-14 advantages. The Lady Bears applied pressure in the third where they took their lone multi-point leads of the match at 14-12 and 21-18.

From there it was all OLA. A 7-2 rally finished by a kill from two-time 3A Miss Volleyball Myah Favre sealed head coach Mike Meyers’ 15th title at the school.

Favre would earn MVP honors for her performance. Our Lady Academy finished the season with 42 wins.

One more South Mississippi team will vie for a title this week.
