High school football on the Mississippi Coast is reaching the end of the runway.

Among the biggest stories of week eight is the first region champion of the year. And not just for South Mississippi, but for the team that won it.

Sticking to the theme of rare ground, another district is nearing a change in the Catholic guard and a school record switched hands at a storied Jackson County program.

Here are the top stories from week eight on the Coast.

Pirates crowned

Pass Christian finally crested the hill it’s been climbing for more than four decades. A runaway 49-0 win over Moss Point sealed the first region title in school history in the 42nd season of classification football in Mississippi.

The Pirates are 3-0 in R8-4A with a 28-14 win over Greene County and a 36-8 win against Forrest County AHS. The Pass will get a non-region test against West Marion Friday before capping the regular season at Bay High.

Pass Christian will get the four-seed out of District of Death Region 7, which will likely be South Pike. That will pit the electric Paris Trivillion-Dwight Thomas connection with 6-foot-5 edge rusher and Missouri commit Micah Nickerson.

Welcome to the playoffs, St. Patrick (almost)

It isn’t official just yet. But St. Patrick’s first-ever win over St. Stanislaus just about makes it a formality. The Irish topped SSC, 38-21, after dropping their first five against the Rock-a-Chaws in a series they had been outscored in 188-18 before Friday.

The only scenario that would keep the Fighting Irish out of the playoff would be a loss to Tylertown plus two wins from 1-7 St. Stanislaus. One of those would have to be over 6-2 West Marion.

Technically both could still reach the 3A field, but it’s looking grim for a Rock-a-Chaws’ team that has had an already small roster ravaged by injuries.

By this time next week we’ll likely be putting to bed two streaks: 12 straight playoff strips for St. Stanislaus and three MHSAA seasons without a playoff for St. Patrick. The Irish’s last ticket was punched in 2020 and was done so entirely thanks to a COVID forfeiture.

Before that year, the last time St. Patrick earned an extra game on the field was in 2010.

Tossin’ touchdowns and breaking records

It’s the second straight season the Pascagoula starting quarterback has broken a school record. But don’t worry, Silas Corder, all your records are still safe.

Jarrad Loper Jr threw for 105 yards and a touchdown in leading the Panthers to a 47-14 win over Long Beach. He also made his 259th career tackle, putting him on top of Tackle Mountain in Pascagoula. Loper moved passed Matt Inlow to reach the top and in the process helped end a five-game losing streak for the Panthers.

Loper took over at quarterback earlier this season against Ocean Springs and has thrown for over 800 yards since. The senior graduates in Dec. and will represent the Coast in Mississippi-Alabama All Star Classic.
