Best of Week 5: Incredible 63-point first half the story of the night in South MS

You know the gears are turning when you come out of halftime with a running clock. Vancleave crossed the goal line nine times in the first half, putting up 63 points on the way to a 69-18 win over Moss Point.

It’s the most points the Bulldogs have scored in a game since defeating South Jones 71-34 in 2020 and the most they’ve ever scored against another Coast opponent. One more stat? It’s the first time Vancleave has scored 60 in a game and allowed 60 in a game in the same season, after dropping the opener 64-21 to St. Martin.

Kyle Capers notched his second 200-yard rushing game of the year and tied his career-high of four rushing touchdowns. For the Tigers, it was the most points they’ve allowed since East Central beat them 70-35 in 2019.

Hurricanes turn another corner

West Harrison has achieved a number of firsts in recent seasons, and it just accomplished yet another one. The Hurricanes are 1-0 in district for the first time in the 17-year history of the program.

In a battle between rare undefeateds, it was West Harrison who kept its record clean and escaped with a 26-21 win over St. Martin. The Hurricanes scored twice in the final nine minutes, both times through the air, to keep their record spotless.

The top of R4-7A is occupied now by Ocean Springs, D’Iberville and West Harrison. The latter two will comprise another battle of undefeateds in one of the most critical matchups of the year in the race for homefield advantage.

Gulfport rounds into form just in time

Gulfport’s two losses were decided on the final play, and its one win before Friday was marred with six turnovers and nearly as many penalty yards as offensive.

The Admirals were the lone R4-7A team finishing their non-region schedule this week, and they took full advantage of the opportunity by walloping Pascagoula 53-13 and producing the cleanest film of the year.

The offense was turnover-free and the defense created four turnovers and got three sacks out of linebacker Deandre Williams. Gulfport’s reward will be opening district play on the road against R4-7A’s heavy favorites Ocean Springs.
