Mississippi high school football star tops 500 yards rushing, ties state TD mark

Ty Keys covered a lot of ground Friday.

The Poplarville running back and four-star prospect in the Class of 2027 ran for 506 yards in a wild 60-54 win over Hancock, according to head coach Jay Beech.

Early unofficial reports put Keys’ total at 546 yards, which would have broken the 10-year-old state record of 543 yards, set by Jaley Adams in 2016. The school has since verified Keys’ total to be 508 yards.

Keys did tie the state’s single-game rushing touchdown record with eight, and did so on only 18 carries.

Keys had 277 yards rushing through two games, and is now the state’s leading rusher with 785 yards through Week 3.

The 6-foot-1 back is nearing 20 college offers. He’s been courted by Ole Miss, Mississippi State, Miami, Oregon and Nebraska among others. Keys is coming off a season in which he missed eight games due to a collarbone injury, but he earned MVP of the 4A state title game.

The Hornets moved to 2-1 with the win and travel to Pearl River Central next week.
