Who will be the Mississippi Coast Athlete of the Week for April 28? Vote now in our poll

The postseason is heating up on diamonds across South Mississippi and some of the area’s brightest stars are stepping up to the plate.

This week features the largest poll of the year with nine athletes included from baseball, softball and flag football.

Athletes are nominated this week from George County, Harrison Central, Hancock Ocean Springs, Pass Christian, St. Martin, St. Patrick, Vancleave and West Harrison. This is not a scientific poll, and you can vote as many times as you’d like until voting ends at noon Monday, May 5, at sunherald.com.

Get to know the nominees here:

  • Bryce O’Neal, George County baseball: O’Neal had five hits, one double, one home run and eight RBIs in a sweep of Terry.
  • Gabrielle Smith, Harrison Central softball: Smith cut down 10 batters and did not allow an earned run in a complete game win over Pearl. She also drove in two runs at the plate.
  • Teegan DeWitt, Hancock softball: DeWitt pitched a four-inning no-hitter with seven strikeouts in Game 1 against Terry and picked up three doubles, one home run and five RBIs during the sweep.
  • Jack Jordan, Ocean Springs baseball: Jordan pitched a complete-game win over Northwest Rankin, striking out three batters and allowing two unearned runs. He also had two hits, a double and three RBIs.
  • Trista Necaise, Pass Christian softball: Necaise pitched a complete-game shutout with a career-high 20 strikeouts in Game 1 of a second round sweep of Lawrence County.
  • Olivia Umanzor, St. Martin flag football: Umanzor had multiple tackles and a key pick-6 to help lead the Yellow Jackets to an 18-0 win over Picayune.
  • Elizabeth Colson, St. Patrick softball: Colson had three hits, one double and five RBIs in Game 1 of a postseason sweep over Magee.
  • Hunter Harper, Vancleave baseball: Harper pitched a complete game in a win over Brookhaven, with seven strikeouts and one earned run allowed. He also picked up three hits, a double, a triple and one RBI.
  • Miranda Parker, West Harrison softball: Parker had four hits with one triple and a home run and drove in six runs in a sweep of West Jones.
