Who will be the Mississippi Coast Athlete of the Week for March 17? Vote now in our poll

The Mississippi Coast softball and baseball seasons have reached the all-important district portion of the schedule, but this week’s top players come from the final week of warm-up play.

Athletes are nominated this week out of Hancock, Harrison Central, Long Beach, Ocean Springs, Vancleave and Stone. This is not a scientific poll, and you can vote as many times as you’d like until voting ends at noon Monday, March 24, at sunherald.com.

Get to know the nominees here:

  • Teegan DeWitt, Hancock softball: The senior struck out 16 batters over two wins, allowing one earned run across 12 innings. DeWitt also picked up five hits with four doubles.
  • Bryan Travis, Harrison Central baseball: Travis hit .429 with two doubles and a home run with three RBIs across two games for the Red Rebels.
  • Will Brady, Long Beach baseball: Brady allowed one run in seven innings with seven strikeouts in a win over Stone. Brady also delivered two hits and drew a walk from the plate.
  • Laynee Davis, Ocean Springs softball: The sophomore racked up 10 hits in three games, with one double and one home run and drove in eight RBIs.

  • Mattie Gibson, Stone softball: Gibson had three hits, including one triple, and six RBIs over three games. She also notched two wins from the circle with 11 total strikeouts.
  • Martin Shaw, Vancleave baseball: Shaw had three multi-hit games with seven total and four runs driven in.
