Ocean Springs stars earn top honors as Greyhounds lead coaches All-Region 4-7A Team
A new era of stars took over the Mississippi Coast’s top district.
There were breakout players abound in Region 4-7A. That’s particularly true for Ocean Springs, which ran the gauntlet unscathed yet again with a young defense and a new quarterback.
District coaches selected the All-Region team, honoring the athletes who made the biggest impacts.
Player of the Year
Bryant Ausmer, Ocean Springs
The senior edge rusher made the most of his lone season as a full-time starter. Ausmer was a terror for opposing offenses, leading the state with 22 sacks.
His sack total ranks top 20 nationally on MaxPreps.com. Ausmer registered 76 tackles as a team captain and 37 of them came in the backfield. The Southeastern Louisiana commit added two forced fumbles, a blocked field goal, a fumble returned for touchdown and a rushing touchdown.
Offensive Player of the Year
Sharroid Whitehead, Ocean Springs
The junior finally enjoyed his awaited breakout season while leading the Greyhounds at quarterback through the back-half of the campaign.
Whitehead’s athleticism provided an element that has proven difficult to manage. He’s rushed for 993 yards and 13 touchdowns and is poised to break the 1,000-yard mark against Brandon. Whitehead has also thrown for 613 yards and eight touchdowns.
Defensive Player of the Year
Andre Peters, Gulfport
South Mississippi’s leading tackler is honored after a season that saw Peters rack up 149 total stops. The junior had nine double-digit tackle games and is top-five in the state in tackles.
Peters made seven stops in the backfield with two sacks. He also forced two fumbles, made three fumble recoveries and had two pass deflections.
