Picayune star named Region 4-6A Player of the Year, Maroon Tide lead All-Region Team

One of the toughest regions in the state didn’t fail to produce.

Region 4-6A featured three of the four best teams on the south side of the state, if the playoffs are any indication, and was packed with star-studded talent.

District coaches selected the All-Region team and honored the long list of standout players who produced at a high level in 2024.

Coach of the Year

Cody Stogner, Picayune

It’s easy to see why region coaches chose Stogner for the honor. Picayune lost a treasure trove of production from a team that fell short of the state title game and many felt the door was open for rising challengers Pascagoula and George County.

Stogner and the Maroon Tide promptly closed that door. Picayune won its fourth straight district title this season and defeated both the Panthers and the Rebels — the latter it did so twice. The Tide have won 24 consecutive region games. Their last loss in region play was Nov. 6, 2020.

Player of the Year

Darrell Smith, Picayune

There’s a small handful of players in the state who have crossed the 2,000-yards rushing mark this year and at the top of the list is Region 4-6A Player of the Year. Smith’s 2,251 yards leads all in Mississippi and he’s done it on 9.2 yards per carry.

Even more impressively, “Robo” rarely left the field. The senior Louisiana commit also plays corner on defense and is a holder and returner on special teams. Smith has 24 tackles and four tackles for loss and has a kick return touchdown. To top it off, he’s thrown two touchdown passes, giving him 28 touchdowns responsible for.

Co-Offensive MVPs

Deuce Knight, George County and Silas Corder, Pascagoula

Knight is honored in this category for the second year in a row after throwing 25 touchdown passes and is joined by fellow 5,000 career passing yards club member Corder.

Knight accounted for 37 total touchdowns despite missing three full games and nearly all of a fourth. Corder led the most prolific offense at Pascagoula in nearly 90 years behind 2,000-plus passing yards and 23 scoring tosses.

Defensive MVP

Tyneke Davis, George County

Davis was a black hole in the interior of the Rebels defensive line. The senior racked up 78 total stops with eight coming in the backfield.

He also forced and recovered a fumble, as well as blocked a kick. Davis is a Bernard Blackwell All Star and holds offers from Holmes Community College and Hinds Community College.

George County’s Deuce Knight looks to throw a pass during a game between George County and Picayune at Lee-Triplett Stadium in Picayune on Friday, Nov. 1, 2024.
