High School Sports

High school baseball state championships are here. Here’s who is representing the Coast.

There are two teams from the Coast still standing.

Vancleave and George County will make the trip to Pearl to represent South Mississippi in the state championships at Trustman Park.

Games will begin May 21, but the Coast teams each open on May 22. Each series is a best two-out-of-three. Here’s the schedule and a quick breakdown of the action ahead.

5A State Championship

Vancleave vs Lafayette

  • Game 1, Wednesday May 22 at 7 p.m.
  • Game 2, Friday May 24 at 7 p.m.
  • Game 3 (if necessary), Saturday May 25 at time to be determined

The Bulldogs haven’t lost to a team not named East Central in over two months. Vancleave dominated South Jones to win South State behind the pitching of Hunter Harper and Tyler West. The Commodores come from the north side of the bracket and are led at the plate by Houston Morgan and Brody Breithaupt.

6A State Championship

George County vs Warren Central

  • Game 1, Wednesday May 22 at 4 p.m.
  • Game 2, Friday May 24 at 4 p.m.
  • Game 3 (if necessary), Saturday May 25 at time to be determined

George County is looking for its first state championship since 1997 and has arguably its best team since that season. The Rebels defeated a tough Pearl River Central squad in South State to earn a shot at a Warren Central team that has won 12 of its last 13 games.

Cayler Havard is riding a 14-game hit streak for GCHS while Brooks Willoughby has emerged for the Vikings, tossing 15.2 innings without an earned run allowed in the postseason.
