Three Mississippi Coast teams earn soccer state championships in Jackson
The St. Patrick Fighting Irish defended their crown as one of three soccer champions from the Mississippi Coast.
The St. Patrick girls made it back-to-back state titles with a 7-0 win over Tupelo Christian in the Class I state title match Friday.
St. Patrick won by mercy rule when Linda Mustered fired the game-ending shot into the back of the net 11 minutes into the second half.
Anna Katherine Thriffiley earned MVP honors after turning in a hat trick. Bella Jordan contributed with a pair of goals.
The win capped a dominant run through the Class I bracket. The Irish outscored the five opponents they faced, 33-0.
The St. Stanislaus boys also competed for a Class I championship Friday, falling 2-0 to St. Andrew’s.
Long Beach defeated Center Hill 3-2 Saturday to earn the Bearcat boys their fourth consecutive state title in the 6A bracket. Easton Van Nordon got the go-ahead goal on a 79th-minute free kick to propel Long Beach. Braiden Bonds scored two goals for the Bearcats.
Bay High’s boys secured a 1-0 win over New Albany to earn the team’s second 4A state title in as many years and give the Coast three champions.
The George County girls fell 3-0 to Saltillo in the Rebels’ first title game appearance since 2002.
