Picayune defensive lineman Jamonta Waller wins 6A Mr. Football

Picayune defensive lineman Jamonta Waller has been named the MHSAA’s 6A Mr. Football for the 2023 season.

The Maroon Tide senior is the top-ranked prospect in the state and a top-50 player nationally, according to 247sports composite.

Waller — a Florida commit— has registered 56 tackles, 19 tackles for loss, nine sacks, two forced fumbles and a blocked punt this season.

It’s the second consecutive season Picayune has fielded a Mr. Football winner: Current Oregon Ducks running back Dante Dowdell earned the honor last season.

It’s also the fifth season in a row the Mississippi Coast has featured a Mr. Football winner.

Picayune is 8-2, district champions for the third year in a row and gunning for a three-peat.
