Pascagoula’s Lorenzo Wright wins district Coach of the Year, meets watery locker room
Sometimes you just have to dive in.
That’s what was clearly on the mind of Pascagoula basketball coach Lorenzo Wright as he contemplated entering the locker room after winning the Region 7-6A championship Friday.
The Pascagoula Athletics Twitter account posted a video Friday night of Wright jumping into the locker room as his players showered him in water following the Panthers’ 52-42 win over D’Iberville.
“They love to do that me, man,” Wright told the Sun Herald. “We’ve been kind of having a little tradition since I got there, they get me every year, just about seems like. ... I was a little under the weather so I didn’t really want to go in there, but I went in anyway.”
Wright was named the district Coach of the Year after beating St. Martin and then the Warriors to earn a first-round bye in the state playoffs.
The Panthers are 18-5 and have won five of their past six games.
“One game at a time approach for us,” Wright said. “That was the biggest game of the season. It was huge because we get the bye next week. ... We needed a little bit of a rest to work on some things and hopefully get us over the hump.”
Pascagoula will play again next Saturday against the winner of Terry at Gulfport.
