The high school coaching carousel is whirling again on the Coast.

Former Stone coach John Feaster will be taking over duties as the newest head football coach for the Moss Point Tigers, the school announced on Monday.

Feaster led the Tomcats program from 2016 through 2022, compiling a record of 39-34.

“Honestly I can say the good outweighs the bad. I had a great time there,” Feaster told the Sun Herald about his time at Stone. “I will be forever grateful and thankful for the opportunity.... I had a great time, the community treated me well. The kids were awesome. It’s going to always be like a home to me.”

Feaster is replacing Eugene Harmon, who retired following his sixth season. Feaster took Stone to the playoffs in all seven seasons, making him the school’s all-time leader in playoff appearances.

The Tomcats most recently enjoyed their best season since 1991, winning nine games, ending Moss Point’s grip on the region with a district title and reaching the 4A South State final.

“From a professional standpoint, it was the best thing, but also it was something God wanted from me,” Feaster said. “I think Stone County was a great experience, a great community and great kids. At this time in my life it was something God wanted me to do.”

Stone’s 45-18 win over Moss Point was the Tomcats’ first win over the Tigers since 1934, ending a nine-game losing streak.

Now Feaster arrives in Moss Point with the intention of taking the program back to its title-competing ways of the 1990s.

“Our goal and our vision is to cultivate the spirit of excellence,” Feaster said. “We want to turn Moss Point back into one of the premier teams on the Gulf Coast. When you talk about football in Mississippi, anytime you go out of state, people are going to ask you about Moss Point. That’s our goal. I know there’s doubters, there’s people who don’t believe it can be done again... I see a spirit of excellence that’s there and it’s up to us as coaches to try and tap into it. I think it can be done.”

The Tigers will not have guaranteed games against Stone now that the Tomcats are moving up to 5A beginning this summer. Instead, it’s 4A power Poplarville who joins Moss Point’s Region 8-4A.

Feaster’s new job was first reported by @Coastfootball on Twitter.

Feaster was named the Sun Herald’s 2022 Coach of the Year.
