Moss Point head football coach and athletic director Eugene Harmon is set to retire this week after 12 years at the school.

Harmon took over as head coach in 2017 and had more wins than any previous coach the Tigers have had since Jerry Alexander and won three of the four district titles Moss Point has earned since 2008.

In six seasons, Harmon was 28-38 with three playoff wins, including a first-round win over Forrest Agricultural this season. Harmon coached Jamarious Brown, Moss Point’s first Dandy Dozen selection since 2007.

Harmon’s teams in 2020 and 2021 finished with a winning record in the regular season for the first time since 2010.

Harmon is a three-time Region 8-4A Coach of the Year and led the power lifting team to a 4A South State title in 2018.

As athletic director, Harmon established middle school soccer, softball, volleyball and varsity golf all while operating with a dwindling student enrollment at MPHS.

Harmon’s career began as a linebacker at Southern Miss, where he’s still one of the school’s all-time leading tacklers, before making stops at Heidelburg High School and Meridian.

Harmon’s retirement is effective Dec. 16.
