Former Gulfport Admiral and NBA standout will star in new Showtime documentary

Gulfport native Mahmoud Abdul-Rauf is the focal point of an upcoming documentary on Showtime highlighting his life as an NBA player and social justice activist.

Stand will be a look at Abdul-Rauf’s journey to the professional ranks and the whirlwind of controversy and courage that followed.

Abdul-Rauf, formerly known as Chris Jackson, and his family moved back to Gulfport this summer. It’s their first time living in Mississippi since leaving the Coast for Florida in 2001 after their just-constructed house was burned down in the Necaise community in Hancock County.

His son, Amir, is a junior at Gulfport High School and is joining Matthew Krass and Kamari Mitchell on Owen Miller’s hoops team.

The documentary is slated to premier on Showtime in early 2023 and the trailer released in August.

The documentary will feature interviews with Stephen Curry, coach Steve Kerr, NBA Hall of Famer Shaquille O’Neal, Jalen Rose and rapper, actor and filmmaker Ice Cube among others.
