The high school football season is right around the corner as August camps kick in and final preparations are made across South Mississippi.
As always, the Gulf Coast has plenty of defensive talent to showcase. Now is your chance to name the Sun Herald fan’s choice Defensive Player of the Year for the 2022 season with representatives from Ocean Springs, Picayune, Biloxi and more.
The poll is not an exact science and you can vote as many times as you like. The poll closes on Monday, August 8 at 5 p.m.
Get to know the players here:
- Trace Carter, Ocean Springs: Carter had 60 tackles and 20 tackles for loss in Blake Pennock’s ultra-aggressive scheme in 2021.
- Jamonta Waller, Picayune: Waller picked up 85 tackles a season ago for the reigning 5A champions and is heading into his junior year after picking up a scholarship offer from Florida A&M.
- Jamarious Brown, Moss Point: One of the top defensive prospects in the region, Brown is an Ole Miss commit holding onto 19 offers just ahead of his senior season.
- Damaryion Fillmore, Biloxi: Fillmore had 76 tackles with 8 tackles for loss a season ago and is hoping to build on his collection of offers in his senior year.
- Monyeh Boykin, Gautier: In Boykin’s junior season last year, the linebacker tallied 81 tackles, 12 tackles for loss and 4 sacks.
- Amarion Ware, Harrison Central: The run-stuffing defensive lineman totaled 81 stops in 2021 with 4 sacks. Ware received a D-I offer from Nicholls in May.
- Gavin Allen, St. Martin: Allen blossomed in 2021 with 91 tackles and will be flanked by Noreel White and DK Jenkins this time around.
- Jared Huff, East Central: Huff jumped up to 95 tackles in 2021 with 9 tackles for loss as a junior.
- Mark Will, Poplarville: One of the most established linebackers on the Coast, Will has 183 tackles over the last two seasons, including 103 in 2021.
- Jacob Bradford, St. Stanislaus: An Iron Man player, Bradford has dominated both sides of the line of scrimmage in his career. Bradford had 84 tackles and 16 tackles for loss last season.
