Brooklynn Montana headlines All-Region 8-6A team
South Mississippi softball continues to be well represented from Region 8-6A. Gulfport, Hancock and Harrison Central all won a playoff series on the statewide stage.
The best players in the district are showcased in the 2022 All-Region team.
Region 8-6A MVP
The junior led the district with eight home runs and 38 RBIs and her team with a .402 batting average. Of her 35 hits, 22 went for extra bases.
Pitcher of the Year
Kinsley Cospelich, Gulfport
Cospelich struck out 110 batters in 89 innings as the Admirals’ go-to starter in the circle. She finished the season with an 8-4 record and a 1.73 ERA.
Defensive Player of the Year
C Cheyenne Tyson, Hancock
Tyson takes home the DPOY honors for her work behind the plate, but also turned in a great season next to it. The senior picked up 26 hits and 22 RBIs.
Offensive Player of the Year
Haley Hughes, Gulfport
When she wasn’t cutting down opponents from the circle with her 1.60 ERA, Hughes was being productive at the plate. The sophomore had 37 hits and scored 27 runs.
Newcomer of the Year
Gabrielle Smith, Harrison Central
The district’s top freshman comes in the form of the Red Rebels top starting pitcher. Smith’s highlights include an eight-strikeout no-hitter against Warren Central.
Coach of the Year
Kristi Basso, Gulfport
Basso led the Admirals to their first 20-win season since 2019 and a perfect 6-0 mark in region play.
