‘A dream come true.’ Former West Harrison basketball star makes WNBA history.
Gulfport native and West Harrison product Ameshya Williams-Holliday has made history.
Williams-Holliday heard her name called in the WNBA draft on Monday night and is heading to the Indiana Fever after the team made her their third round selection.
A graduate of Jackson State, Williams-Holliday is the first HBCU player to be taken in the WNBA draft in 20 years.
“It’s an honor, a dream come true and a blessing to be able to be a part of history and to be able to open doors for our HBCU community,” Williams-Holliday told CNN. “Being a trailblazer feels amazing, but there is so much more to accomplish.”
Williams-Holliday began her college career at Mississippi State before transferring to Jackson State. She quickly carved out a role at JSU as one of the league’s best players.
She led JSU to a 48-3 record in Southwest Conference play and won Defensive Player of the Year three times. This past season, Williams-Holliday took home Conference Player of the Year after averaging 19.2 points, 11.4 rebounds and 2.7 blocks per game.
Williams-Holliday played under former Sun Herald Coach of the Year Otis Gates at WHHS.
