New Gulfport High soccer coach boasts hall of fame resume
Gulfport High School on Monday announced Donevin Esterhuizen as its new boys soccer coach.
Esterhuizen was formally introduced at a meeting of the Gulfport School District Board of Trustees.
The Admirals are replacing Patrick Wadsworth, who stepped down in March following a 9-7-1 season that saw GHS miss the playoffs.
“I believe this job is one of the best in the state,” said GHS Athletic Director Bryan Caldwell. “As we evaluated the various candidates, Donevin Esterhuizen quickly rose to the top of the list. In the soccer world, he is considered one of the top coaches in South Mississippi.”
Esterhuizen is a native of South Africa who played soccer at William Carey University and has since been inducted into the WCU Hall of Fame.
He arrives in Gulfport following 17 years as a member of the Gulf Coast United Futbol Club coaching staff.
“I was extremely impressed by the level of professionalism that Gulfport High School has displayed and I am honored to continue that level of professionalism as their head coach,” Esterhuizen said. “I’m excited to work with the team to help them not only excel on the field, but to also be the best individuals on and off the field as student athletes.”
