A Picayune football star gets first college offer after Maroon Tide’s state title win
Dante Dowdell just had a weekend he will not soon forget.
Picayune’s star running back ran for 139 yards and two scores on Saturday to help lead the Maroon Tide to a 5A state championship.
Dowdell was named the game’s MVP for his efforts in the 40-21 win over West Point in Hattiesburg.
The next day, Dowdell posted on Twitter that he received an offer to play football from The University of Southern Mississippi and Golden Eagles head coach Will Hall.
It is Dowdell’s first collegiate scholarship offer.
Dowdell had an impressive 2021 campaign as Picayune’s featured back, rushing for 2,545 yards in 15 games. He also had 28 touchdowns on the ground, including eight scores in the postseason.
The class of 2023 product has accumulated over 3,000 rushing yards in his career and was named to both the All-Region team and the All-State 5A team by coaches in Region 4 and across the state.
Picayune will have Dowdell for one more year, alongside the dangerously fast Chris Davis, to make another run at a state title with.
