Get to know the finalists here:
- Picayune running back Dante Dowdell has been the featured back in the state’s top rushing offense all season and didn’t let up when the playoffs came. Dowdell’s signature game came in the south state title bout against Laurel where the junior ran for 292 yards and three touchdowns in a win for the Maroon Tide.
- Dowdell’s partner-in-crime, running back Chris Davis, has come up big for the Maroon Tide, as well. Davis had a three-touchdown performance against Hattiesburg in the first round and scored the go-ahead touchdown against Laurel to sent Picayune to the championship game against West Point.
- Poplarville fought its way to the 4A south state title game behind a stifling defense that’s led by linebacker Khalid Moore. The Mississippi State commit made his presence felt against Raymond in the first round with nine tackles and two sacks. The senior was disruptive against Moss Point, recording three quarterback hurries, a pass deflection and a forced fumble. Moore played a key role in holding Mendenhall and Columbia to just 12 points each.
- Ocean Springs found itself in the second round of the playoffs for the first time in seven years thanks largely to the play of 6A Mr. Football Bray Hubbard. He accounted for five total touchdowns against Pearl before running for a career-high 187 yards and a score against Oak Grove.
- Larry Simmons ended a storied career at Moss Point with an all-time performance in the postseason. After putting up 88 yards and scoring three times in the first round, Simmons went off in his final game as a Moss Point Tiger. The wide receiver ran for 125 yards and two touchdowns while also catching five passes for 107 yards and a score.
