‘Next level’ QB lifts Ocean Springs over Hancock. Here’s all the South MS game recaps.
Ocean Springs junior quarterback Bray Hubbard did it all for the Greyhounds, leading the way for a 45-21 victory over previously undefeated Hancock High School.
Hubbard ran for a pair of touchdowns and passed for another as the fourth-ranked Greyhounds improved to 4-0 overall in the Region 4-6A opener for both teams.
Hubbard completed 19 of 22 passes for 149 yards, including a 24-yard scoring pass to Holton White, and ran 19 times for 133 yards and touchdown runs of 4 yards and 45 yards.
“Bray’s game is next level,” Ocean Springs coach Blake Pennock told ScoreBook Live. “He really understands what we’re trying to do offensively. He really executed the passing game tonight.”
Ocean Springs jumped out to a 28-0 lead in the first half and coasted the rest of the way. Junior tailback David Humphries added 116 yards rushing on 16 carries and scored two touchdowns, as the Greyhounds ran for 306 yards.
Cameron Miller led Hancock (3-1 overall) with 49 yards rushing on 12 carries.
Ocean Springs will travel to D’Iberville next week in a showdown to ranked undefeated teams. Hancock will host St. Martin next week.
D’Iberville 34, Biloxi 14
The Warriors had another dominant game on the ground and on defense to roll past the Indians in the region opener for both teams at Biloxi.
Ninth-ranked D’Iberville (5-0 overall) had two 100-yard rushers against Biloxi (1-3 overall). Senior Drey Lenoir had 125 yards rushing on 20 carries, and senior Colton Deshazo had 111 yards on the ground on 14 runs and two touchdowns.
Deshazo opened the scoring for the Warriors on a 3-yard run and added a 47-yard touchdown scamper in the second half. D’Iberville also scored on a fumble recovery by Tony Taylor.
Senior quarterback Lance Garlotte completed 4 of 8 passes for 57 yards and a 15-yard touchdown pass to Lenoir. Gavin Vassilli also scored on a 1-yard run.
Senior Gabe Greene had nine tackles to lead the Warriors on defense, Manny Duplessis had eight tackles, including a sack, and senior Kam Williams had seven tackles, including a sack and a forced fumble.
D’Iberville will host Ocean Springs next week, while Biloxi is at home against Harrison Central.
Gulfport 41, St. Martin 7
The Admirals opened Region 4-6A play with a smashing home victory over the Yellow Jackets.
Senior tailback Tyler Reed ran for 134 yards and scored two touchdowns to lead Gulfport (3-2 overall). Jakylon Campbell scored on a 2-yard run and Reed added a 77-yard scoring run as the Admirals jumped out to a 14-0 first-quarter lead.
Reed had a 1-yard run in the second quarter, and Gulfport made it 28-0 right before halftime on a 27-yard touchdown pass from Jacob Palazzo to Gavin Brown. Palazzo also had a 16-yard TD pass to Tavaris Henshaw in the third quarter.
Gulfport will play at Pascagoula next week; St. Martin (2-3 overall) will be at Hancock.
Harrison Central 33, Pascagoula 31
Christian Turner and Tri Gaighf combined for 299 passing yards and three touchdowns to keep the Red Rebels undefeated in the region opener for both teams at Lyman.
Turner completed 12 of 19 passes for 151 yards and one score, and Gaughf was 13 of 19 for 151 yards and two touchdowns. Isaiah Atkins had 16 catches for 180 yards and two touchdowns for Harrison Central (4-0 overall).
The Red Rebels will go on the road next week to face Biloxi; Pascagoula (1-4 overall) host Gulfport.
East Central 43, West Harrison 13
Quarterback Deuce Hugger scored five touchdowns to power the Hornets past the Hurricanes in the Region 4-5A opener for both teams at Gulfport.
Hugger ignited a 22-point first quarter for East Central (3-1 overall) with a 71-yard touchdown run, then added touchdown runs of 2 yards and 1 yard in the period.
Hugger had a 5-yard scoring run and a 9-yard touchdown pass to Brady Fant in the second quarter. Fant also had a 20-yard touchdown run in the third quarter.
The Hornets will travel to Pearl River Central next week, while West Harrison (1-3 overall) is at George County.
