Prep Roundup: Harrison Central thumps ‘Goula with big game from QB, Picayune survives

The Harrison Central football team delivered the most impressive showing of Week 2 in South Mississippi, rolling over Pascagoula 46-7 behind a breakout performance from its sophomore quarterback.

Christian Turner completed 15 of 17 passes for 319 yards and five touchdowns. He also ran four times for 26 yards and a score as the Red Rebels jumped out to a 39-0 lead at the half.

“Last week, he had to get the first-game jitters out of the way,” Harrison Central coach Casey Cain said. “We were trying to play better from the first game to the second game. We got out there and (senior receiver Jacobi Moore was on). We hit him the first three series of the game and he had three touchdowns.”

Before leaving the field in the second quarter with an unspecified injury, Moore had five catches for 170 yards and three scores.

Isaiah Atkins also contributed four catches for 79 yards and a touchdown. Mikuan Sanders added three receptions for 61 yards and a score.

Atavian Ray was the leading rusher for Harrison Central (2-0) with five carries for 89 yards and a TD.

“We beat them on the deep ball,” Cain said. “Our offensive coaches did a great job of game planning. We feel like our receivers are really good. We took our shots and we were able to run by them.”

Harrison Central next plays at West Harrison on Sept. 25.

Friday’s game marked the season opener for the team after it was shut down for weeks due to a COVID-19 outbreak at the school. The team resumed practice on Monday.

“We looked good, but we made a lot of mistakes. We had a bunch of penalties,” Biloxi coach Katlan French said. “Up front, we missed a lot of blocks. I thought the whole defense played pretty solid the whole game. There were no growing pains on that end.”

Pearl River Central 19, St. Martin 17: Sophomore Destin Coleman rushed for all three touchdowns as the Blue Devils improved to 2-0 in Carriere.

Special teams proved crucial with senior Brady Johnson blocking a field goal attempt by St. Martin with 3 minutes remaining.

“It was a lot of heart and guts,” PRC coach Jacob Owen said. “The defense played extraordinary. We overcome more adversity in one game that I’ve seen in a season. These kids have got some fight. It’s a special little group.”

Makia Hebert had a 46-yard TD run and Noreel White returned a kickoff 98 yards for a touchdown for the Yellow Jackets (0-2).

Stone High 34, Hancock 9: Stone High junior running back Carlos Brown ran 22 times for 156 yards and two touchdowns as the Tomcats (1-0) rolled to a season-opening win on the road.

Picayune (2-0) built an early 20-0 lead before Gulfport (0-2) attempted to mount a comeback.

Picayune coach Cody Stogner credited his defense for closing out the victory and he saw improvement out of his offense following a six-turnover showing at Meridian last week.

“We definitely cleaned up some things on offense,” Stogner said. “We took care of the ball, executed better. We can still get so much better than the way we played, but I’m proud of the guys for stepping up to the challenge.”

Peyton Wadell added six carries for 79 yards for the Maroon Tide.

Gulfport receiver Zayshun Crawford had a big night, catching a pair of passes for 101 yards and a TD.

First-year head coach Chase Carmody credited his defense for holding steady and helping the team get revenge after last year’s 41-38 loss to the Hurricanes.

“We had spots where they had the ball deep in our territory several times,” he said. “We found a way to keep them out of the end zone for much of the night.”

Bay High 32, St. Patrick 0: After being introduced to their new $1.8 million fieldhouse earlier in the day, the Tigers (1-0) rode that high to a convincing win.

Junior running back Noah Cutter scored three touchdowns — two on runs and another on a long pass play. He ran seven times for 78 yards and caught five passes for 163.

Friday night’s game became Bay High’s season opener after Forrest County AHS had to cancel the previous week due to a COVID-19 outbreak.

Kyle Fayard led the Bay High defense with five sacks.

“I think our kids were just so ready to play after having the cancellation,” Bay High coach Jeremy Turcotte said. “We have a good little core and a pretty decent size senior class.”

Bay High’s Josh Peter completed 10 of 19 passes for 229 yards and two TDs.

St. Stanislaus 21, West Marion 19: Kyle Stegall ran 13 times for 132 yards as SSC (2-0) beat the Trojans on Pearl River Community College’s campus in Poplarville.
