Demetrius Whitaker had two interceptions, including a pick-six as Stone beat West Jones 24-14 on Friday night in round one of the Class 5A state playoffs.

It was Stone’s first playoff win since 1991. That year, Stone reached the 4A state finals.

“It feels awesome to get that monkey off our back,” Stone coach John Feaster said. “Our kids were resilent.”

The Tomcats overcame a 14-0 second half deficit by scoring the last 24 points. Kentrell McCray and Trey Arrington also scored touchdowns for the Tomcats.

The Tomcats (8-3) will host Hattiesburg in second round action next week at A.L. May Stadium in Perkinston.
