East Central finishes off perfect regular season vs. Vancleave
The East Central football team closed out a perfect regular season with a 62-7 win at Vancleave Friday night.
The Hornets (9-0, 5-0 in Region 8-4A) will play host to Lanier (4-7) in the first round of the Class 4A South State playoffs on Nov. 3.
“It just solidifies everything we’ve worked for,” Smith said of finishing off a perfect regular season. “These guys have put in a tremendous amount of work. They’ve bought in with a tremendous attitude and awesome effort. They’re reaping what they sow.”
East Central senior running back Tony Brown ran 15 times for 201 yards and six touchdowns, giving him a total of 11 touchdowns over the last two weeks and 27 for the season.
Senior quarterback Rylee Brown continued to be accurate throwing the ball, completing 5 of 8 attempts for 66 yards.
Jared Goff added three carries for 70 yards and a touchdown for East Central.
Vancleave’s lone score came on a 10-yard touchdown pass from Tristan Glass to Xavier Bass with 1:34 left in the second quarter.
East Central responded with a 9-yard touchdown run by Brown with 9 seconds left in the half to give the Hornets a 34-7 lead at halftime.
Vancleave’s season came to a close Friday night with a record of 3-7.
