For the first time in a long time Poplarville can claim an undefeated regular season.

With Friday’s 58-20 victory at Lawrence County, the Hornets’s 2017 team (10-0, 5-0) joins its 1959 (9-0) and 1972 (11-0) counterparts as the only Poplarville squads with unblemished regular seasons.

Now PHS must turn its attention to another postseason run, with the fourth-place team from Region 5-4A awaiting the reigning Class 4A South State champions.

Poplarville built a commanding 37-8 halftime advantage. Ross Barnett opened the scoring with a safety. Ethan Taylor added touchdown runs of 7 and 11 yards, while Antonio Barnes hooked up with Canaan Ray for scores of 20 and 9 yards. Cory Knight also scored on a 3-yard run in the first half.

The Hornets continued to pile on in the second half with runs of 13 and 49 for Caziah Daniels and another 24-yard score from Blaise Breerwood.

PHS will face Northeast Lauderdale in Round 1.
