Poplarville and East Central lead Coast schools in latest AP poll

Poplarville and East Central are back in this week’s Associated Press rankings after another eventful Friday night.

The PHS Hornets (9-0) actually slipped a spot to No. 7 in this week’s overall top 10 despite cruising past Purvis 69-34. Poplarville essentially swapped spots with Madison Central.

After topping Bay 54-13, ECHS (8-0) remained at No. 10.

The entire top 10 included No. 1 West Point, No. 2 Tupelo, No. 3 Pearl, No. 4 Starkville, No. 5 Hattiesburg, No. 6 Madison Central, No. 7 Poplarville, No. 8 Cleveland Central, No. 9 Northwest Rankin and No. 10 East Central.

Both Hornets teams are atop the Class 4A rankings once again with Poplarville a unanimous No. 1 selection and East Central right behind.

Picayune (7-2) is the only other Coast school in this week’s AP rankings. The Maroon Tide slipped one spot to No. 5 after falling to Hattiesburg 41-37.

All Associated Press members in Mississippi are eligible to participate in the high school football poll. Those who voted for this week’s poll are: Sun Herald; Commercial Dispatch; Bolivar Commercial; Hattiesburg Post; Enterprise-Journal; Natchez Democrat; Oxford Eagle; Starkville Daily News; Northeast Mississippi Daily Journal; Vicksburg Post; WCBI-TV, Columbus; WTVA-TV, Tupelo.
