Poplarville has company from another Coast school in latest AP prep poll

For much of the year Poplarville has been the lone Coast school in the weekly Associated Press Mississippi high school football poll.

Not anymore.

Fellow Class 4A program East Central (7-0) joined the green-and-gold Hornets when the AP’s latest rankings were released Tuesday. ECHS topped rival St. Stanislaus 41-7 on Friday.

Poplarville (8-0) sat at No. 7 for several weeks but climbed up one spot this week after both Madison Central and Olive Branch lost. Picayune (7-1) received six points, good enough for 13th in the statewide Top 10.

The overall Top 10 includes: No. 1 West Point, No. 2 Pearl, No. 3 Tupelo, No. 4 Starkville, No. 5 Hattiesburg, No. 6 Poplarville, No. 7 Madison Central, No. 8 Cleveland Central, No. 9 Northwest Rankin and No. 10 East Central.

The Maroon Tide improved one spot in the Class 5A rankings to No. 4. Poplarville remained the unanimous selection as the top 4A school, with East Central still in second.

No other Coast programs appeared in this week’s rankings.

All Associated Press members in Mississippi are eligible to participate in the high school football poll. Those who voted for this week’s poll are: Sun Herald; Commercial Dispatch; Bolivar Commercial; Greene County Herald; Hattiesburg Post; Enterprise-Journal; Natchez Democrat; Oxford Eagle; Starkville Daily News; Northeast Mississippi Daily Journal; Vicksburg Post; WCBI-TV, Columbus; and WTVA-TV, Tupelo.
