Poplarville Hornets are digging in as AP’s top-ranked Class 4A school

The Poplarville Hornets (7-0) continue to represent the top-ranked Class 4A school and South Mississippi’s best team. The weekly Associated Press high school football rankings were released Tuesday with the Hornets entrenched as the No. 7 team in the state and the top 4A school.

East Central (6-0) is still just on the outside of the state-wide Top 10 ranking with seven points, 11 behind No. 10 Horn Lake. Picayune (6-1) picked up two points in the overall poll this week.

The state-wide Top 10 remained unchanged with week with No. 1 West Point, No. 2 Pearl, No. 3 Tupelo, No. 4 Starkville, No. 5 Hattiesburg, No. 6 Madison Central, No. 7 Poplarville, NO. 8 Olive Branch, No. 9 Cleveland Central and Horn Lake.

Picayune remained at No. 5 in the Class 5A poll, while Poplarville and East Central are still No. 1 and 2 in Class 4A.

All Associated Press members in Mississippi are eligible to participate in the high school football poll. Those who voted for this week's poll are: The Sun Herald, Commercial Dispatch, Bolivar Commercial, Greene County Herald, Hattiesburg American, Hattiesburg Post, Enterprise-Journal, Natchez Democrat, Oxford Eagle, Starkville Daily News, Northeast Mississippi Daily Journal, Vicksburg Post, WCBI-TV, Columbus and WTVA-TV, Tupelo.
