East Central star breaks loose late to earn Sun Herald honor

East Central senior running back Tony Brown picked up where he left off in his record-breaking junior campaign.

Brown rushed 26 times for 236 yards and a touchdown while also pulling in three passes for 35 yards in a 24-10 win over Biloxi in the season opener.

His impressive performance Friday night earns him the Sun Herald Offensive Player of the Week honor.

Brown is the nation's top returning rusher after getting 364 carries for 3,317 yards and 41 touchdowns a year ago.

His touchdown Friday night came on a 47-yard scamper, giving East Central its first lead of the game at 16:10 with 9:11 remaining. His 50-yard run late in the fourth quarter set up another touchdown for the Hornets (1-0).
