Four turnovers doom Gulfport at Petal
The Gulfport Admirals couldn’t overcome four turnovers in Friday night’s 28-21 loss at Petal.
The two schools traded shots much of the night with Petal jumping ahead 7-0. Gulfport (1-1) responded with a 6-yard touchdown run from T.Q. Newsome but still trailed 7-6.
After Petal (1-1) went on a run, pushing its lead to 21-6, the Admirals responded with one of their own.
Karlos Dillard scored on a 3-yard run and Newsome found the end zone for the second time on a 2-yard score. Newsome’s second score, which tied the game 21-21, was set up by a Carlos Thomas interception.
Late in the fourth quarter the Panthers missed a 35-yard field goal but the Admirals fumbled on their own 7 and the Panthers cashed in with the decisive score.
Gulfport returns to the field Saturday when the Admirals visit Archbishop Rummel in Metairie, Louisiana.
