The Yellow Jackets put a sting on Tylertown, earning the St. Martin team a second straight victory with a 31-6 win Friday at Joe Barlow Stadium.

The Yellow Jackets’ offense attacked the Tylertown defensive front, and with some early success, they went at the heart of the Chief’s defense all night, picking up positive yardage play after play.

St. Martin won the toss but deferred to the second half. On the second play from scrimmage, Tylertown fumbled, and St. Martin recovered, and the Yellow Jackets went right to work, putting together a 42-yard, 8-play drive. Jovann “Ham” McGee had runs of 14 and 15 yards before Mileon Graham carried for the score from 1 yard out.

“I won the toss, and I deferred, which was a big question mark,” said Yellow Jackets coach Eddie Whitehead. “We put it in their quarterback’s hands early, but the defense answered the call and got the turnover around the 40, and we marched it down and scored. And I think that kind of set the tone.

“Of course Elijah’s (Washington) two big returns were huge for us,” Whitehead said. “And I think our defense played really well.”

Washington had kickoff returns of 56 and 48 yards in the second half, and the Yellow Jackets capitalized on both, scoring touchdowns both times.

Washington opened the second half fielding the kickoff at the 14 yardline. He picked up a couple of blocks near the middle of the field and broke to the home sideline before being tackled at the Tylertown 30 yardline.

Graham carried for runs of 7, 6 and 4 yards before McGee scored on a 7-yard run for his second touchdown of the night.

Tylertown got on the scoreboard on their ensuing possession, capping a 7-play drive with a 31-yard scoring pass from Da’Bryan Magee to Dashon Baker. The PAT kick failed; St. Martin led 21-6 with 3:32 remaining in the third quarter.

Washington returned Tylertown’s ensuing kickoff 48 yards to Tylertown’s 37 yardline. McGee capped the 4-play drive with a 9-yard run for his third touchdown of the game.

Sean Gomez closed out the game’s scoring with a 37-yard field goal with 1:40 remaining in the game. Gomez kicked four points after touchdowns.

“We didn’t have a lot of penalties,” said Whitehead. “Discipline-wise we didn’t have any penalties; they tried to draw us offside a few times. That was really good. Last week we had a lot of penalties, but we cut them back this week.

Graham led the Yellow Jackets with 116 yards and a touchdown. McGee added 100 yards and three touchdowns.
