West Harrison junior helps Hurricanes soar, takes Sun Herald honor

Junior Deniyah Downs played a big role as West Harrison powered its way to its first Class 5A Girls South State track and field championship on Saturday.

Downs was a double winner for the Hurricanes in the high jump and the triple jump at Jim Rose Field at the Gulfport High School track complex.

Downs jumped 4 feet, 10 inches in the high jump and 36 feet in the triple jump.

The 1A/3A/5A state track meet is set for Friday at Pearl High School.
