Fred Couples has withdrawn from the 2016 Mississippi Gulf Resort Classic, the tournament announced Tuesday. Couples, who won the event in 2012, continues to battle back issues.

"We are going to miss Fred Couples playing in the Mississippi Gulf Resort Classic this year," tournament director Steve Nieman said. "Freddie is a tremendous player and a proud champion on the Mississippi Gulf Coast. He has expressed his disappointment in not being able to compete in our tournament, which is one of his favorites on the PGA TOUR Champions schedule. We look forward to hosting him next year."

The MGRC still boasts one of the strongest fields ever. 2015 champion David Frost will defend his title against some of the best players in the world, including former champions Jeff Maggert and Michael Allen, and World Golf Hall of Fame members Tom Kite, Bernhard Langer, Colin Montgomerie and Larry Nelson. The field features 26 of the Top 30 on the current Charles Schwab Cup Money List.

The MGRC, presented by C Spire, will take place March 31 - April 3 at Fallen Oak in Saucier.
