Finding love on the links this Valentine's Day

Facebook just celebrated Friends Day.

We'll celebrate Black History Month for an extra day this year. Super Day is behind us. Valentine's Day lies ahead. For golfers, February 14th offers a chance to cover a turquoise box with pink, or maybe green is a better choice of wrapping paper.

What about couples golf during the day and Chateaubriand for two at night? A novel idea indeed. Kay's, Jared and Zales have bombarded us with the notion that "Being in love with your best friend is everything." Check that. If you're married to your best friend, play golf together.

Unfortunately, Charlotte does not play golf. In our 35 years together I can remember two times that she attempted to humor me by donning Skorts and a soft spikes, once at Edgewater Bay in a mixed scramble, and once in the Italian Open at Pass Christian Isles CC. We still talk and laugh about the Peroni Par 3 and how she found dry land with her hybrid.

Maybe it's fortunate. Maybe that's why she's still my best friend and roommate after 33 years of marriage. Her lack of golf does not stop us from spending time together on the course. Our DogPound trips with other couples have created memories for a lifetime. Her companionship while working USGA, PGA and NCAA events has been unforgettable. We cherish our friendships made along the way.

She knows I love golf, so she gives me every chance to enjoy it. I know she loves a nice dinner, a slow dance and a long kiss, so I take every opportunity to share those occasions. I've learned, and it took me a long time, to appreciate the fine art of shopping, to relish dressing up on date nights and to adore conversations at 5 a.m..

On Facebook Pav and Broome suggests that "Love is forever." I agree. I Corinthians tells us that we should stand firmly in faith, hope and love, and for best friends who love each other, the course is a great place to take a stance. Tee for two, anyone?

Tommy Snell, golf coach at Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College, writes a column for the Sun Herald.
