Ole Miss freshman arrested on domestic violence charge

Ole Miss freshman defensive end Charles Wiley is facing a misdemeanor charge of domestic violence-simple assault Tuesday after being arrested by the Oxford Police Department.

Wiley, a native of Stockbridge, Ga., was taken into custody Monday evening and booked into the Lafayette County Detention Center. The OPD responded to a call at McLarty Road at approximately 5:15 Monday evening.

A woman, who is believed to be Wiley’s girlfriend, was also taken into custody for the same charge by the OPD. Both Wiley and the woman showed signs of an assault had taken place, and in that case, an arrest has to be made, according to law.

Wiley made an appearance before City Court Judge Larry Little on Tuesday morning and posted bond. He will need to make an appearance at a later date to deal with the charge.

Ole Miss is a little more than a week away from starting summer drills leading up to the 2016 season. Wiley’s arrest is the first for an Ole Miss player in what has been a quiet summer.

“We are aware of the situation and recognize the proper authorities are responsible for the matter,” coach Hugh Freeze said in a statement to the Clarion-Ledger. “Charles is being withheld from all team activities while the process moves forward. We take incidents like this very seriously and will make decisions once the course of action is complete.”
