No. 13 Ole Miss thumps Bearcats; No. 17 MSU ties Oklahoma
Ole Miss wrapped up the Chanticleer Classic with a 7-1 win over Cincinnati Sunday at Springs Brooks Stadium. Thanks in part to a six-run second inning, the Rebels (10-1) held an early 7-0 lead and never looked back, completing the tournament sweep.
"You never know what to expect going on the road for the first time, but we played really well this weekend," said Rebels coach Mike Bianco. "I'm really proud of the way our guys came out and were very business-like all weekend long."
Junior Sean Johnson (3-0) turned in a phenomenal performance on the mound. In six innings of work, Johnson allowed just one hit and issued one walk, retiring the final 17 batters he faced. The trio of Matt Denny, Andrew Lowe and Connor Green pitched the remaining three innings. As a staff, the Rebel arms surrendered just two hits and allowed only four base runners throughout the ball game.
Ole Miss recorded 11 hits, including four doubles, to score at least seven runs for the fourth straight game. Eight Rebels in the starting lineup tallied a hit on the afternoon.
Freshman designated hitter Ryan Olenek led the way, going 3-for-3. Colby Bortles and Cameron Dishon had two RBIs apiece, and sophomore Will Golsan scored twice.
No. 17 Mississippi State 5, Oklahoma 5: MSU and Oklahoma played to a tie on the final day of Dodger Stadium College Baseball Classic in a contest played at Dodger Stadium.
MSU (8-3-1) was unable to protect a 5-1 lead and saw Oklahoma (4-7-1) rally with two runs in the fourth inning and single scores in the fifth and sixth innings. The contest was called after nine innings because of a three-hour time limit for travel purposes.
Vance Tatum pitched the final 3 2/3 innings, allowing just one hit and facing the minimum number of batters (11). Tatum gave his team a chance to rally but the Bulldogs couldn't break through with another score.
Southern Miss 3, Auburn 1: Three Southern Miss pitchers limited Auburn to one run and the Golden Eagles (10-2) manufactured three runs on just two hits to defeat the Tigers at Bayfront Stadium, winning all three games in the Cox Diamond Invitational.
The Golden Eagles tied the score in the fourth. Tim Lynch scored on a double play. Southern Miss added solo runs late in the game with Nick Dawson registering a sacrifice fly in the seventh, before Storme Cooper brought in a run on a bases loaded walk in the eighth.
Luke Lowery (2-0) got the win with two innings of perfect relief. Nick Sandlin earned the save.
