Kaden Magwood, a star basketball recruit from Louisville, makes his college commitment

A star basketball recruit from Louisville has made his college choice.

On Tuesday, class of 2025 guard Kaden Magwood announced his college commitment to Auburn. Magwood — a 6-foot-2, 168-pound guard — picked the Tigers over two other finalists, North Carolina State and Ole Miss.

According to the 247Sports Composite, Magwood is a four-star prospect and is ranked as the No. 60 overall player in the 2025 class.

Auburn’s 2025 recruiting class now has two commits. Magwood joins three-star guard Simon Walker, an Alabama native, as incoming freshmen for head coach Bruce Pearl next season.

Both Magwood and Walker signed their national letters of intent to play at Auburn during the November early signing period.

Magwood began his high school basketball career at Western High School. The Louisville native has made two other stops since then: He played at the prestigious Oak Hill Academy (Virginia) and is now spending his senior season at Combine Academy (North Carolina), which plays as part of the Overtime Elite league under the Blue Checks name.

During his lone season at Western as a freshman during the 2021-22 high school campaign, Magwood and the Warriors went an impressive 23-5 overall but lost to Butler in the semifinals of the 22nd District Tournament.

Magwood averaged 13.7 points per game that season while shooting a sensational 51.6% from 3-point range.

This summer when speaking to reporters, including the Herald-Leader, at the NBPA Top 100 Camp in Orlando, Florida, Magwood reflected on the strides he’s made since leaving Louisville.

“It’s crazy because I never thought I was going to go to Oak Hill. It was just a very surprising thing that my dad told me I was going to Oak Hill,” Magwood said. “So thinking about that, and how much I’ve grown as a player, and a person, is just crazy. On and off the court, I’ve grown. I’m a leader on and off the court. It’s crazy to think about.”

One of Magwood’s most impressive performances as a recruit came at the NBPA Top 100 Camp, which is considered a top evaluation setting. Magwood was among the camp’s leaders in points (17.0 per game) and assists (3.4).

“I feel like (my game) fits great because I can pass, I can score, I can play defense,” Magwood said. “I can really jell with everybody.”

At that time, plenty of buzz surrounded a potential official visit that Magwood was setting up with hometown school Louisville, which is under the new leadership this season of head coach Pat Kelsey. But an official visit to the Cardinals never materialized.

Magwood took an official visit to all three of his final schools. He visited Auburn in late September, N.C. State in late August and Ole Miss, also in late August.

Kelsey and the Cardinals are yet to land a commitment from a high school prospect in the 2025 recruiting class.
