MGCCC Roundup: Several Gulf Coast Bulldogs land awards
Mississippi Gulf Coast's Davion Cole-Johnson, Anfernee Hampton, Deshawn Jones and have been recognized by MACJC and Region 23 coaches for their performances this season.
The Bulldogs finished the 2015-16 season 19-7, two victories away from a berth in the NJCAA Tournament.
Cole-Johnson was named to the All-Region 23 Team and All-MACJC South Division First Team. The 6-foot-4, 210-pound freshman forward from Glen Ellyn, Ill., averaged 18.2 points and 5.6 rebounds for the Bulldogs. He shot 47.7 percent from the floor and 31.6 from behind the three-point line.
Hampton was named to the All-Region 23 Team. The 6-foot-5, 170-pound senior shooting guard from Jim Hill averaged 15.4 points and 3.8 rebounds per game. Hampton was also named to the Region 23 All-Tournament Second Team.
Jones, a 6-foot-3, 180-pound sophomore point guard from West Harrison, was named All-MACJC South Division Second Team. He averaged 13.9 points, 3.6 rebounds and 3.9 assists per game.
Watson named to All-MACJC South team: Mississippi Gulf Coast sophomore guard Markeisha Watson was named to the All-MACJC South Division Second Team by the state's coaches.
The 5-foot-9 shooting guard from Pascagoula averaged 14.8 points, 6.0 rebounds and 2.7 assists per game.
Lady Bulldogs blast Hinds: Mississippi Gulf Coast pounded its way out of a three-game hitting slump Monday, getting 26 hits in a doubleheader sweep of Hinds in Raymond.
The No. 6 Lady Bulldogs (20-2, 4-2 MACJC) won both games in five innings, beating the Lady Eagles 11-0 in Game 1 and 8-0 in the second.
The sweep leaves Long three wins away from 500 for his collegiate coaching career, all at Gulf Coast.
He is now 497-195 (.718).
Nora Keehn (5-0) got the win in the opener, allowing just three hits and struck out six.
Kaitlin Lee struck out six in Game 2 to improve to 10-1. She hasn't walked a batter in 23.2 innings, striking out 23 in that span.
Gulf Coast returns to action Friday at Coahoma. The doubleheader starts at 1 p.m.
Lee wins third MACJC award of season: Lee won her third MACJC Pitcher of the Week award of the young season Tuesday.
The sophomore right-hander from Harrison Central, who has already won NJCAA Pitcher of the Week this year, too, didn't allow an earned run in four appearances during the week, posting a 1-1 record with a save. She struck out 16 batters in 15 innings, allowing only seven hits.
