PERKINSTON - No. 6 Mississippi Gulf Coast swept its first six games to open the season in the Wallace State Tournament. Now, two of the players who helped fuel the 6-0 start have swept the MACJC weekly awards.
Shortstop Lexie Mathis was named Player of the Week and sophomore Kaitlin Lee was named Pitcher of the Week.
Mathis, a freshman from Baker High in Mobile, batted .421 and slugged four home runs, driving in 11 runs. She also had a double on the way to slugging 1.105. She hit home runs in the last three games, one each against Faulkner State and San Jacinto College-South, and two against Wallace State.
Lee, an Ole Miss signee from Harrison Central, went 3-0 with a 0.88 ERA during. She struck out eight in a five-hitter against Navarro in a 6-1 victory on Friday. On Sunday, Lee pitched a five-inning complete game 10-1 win against San Jacinto College-South, striking out three, walking one and allowing three hits. She entered the final game against Wallace State down 8-4 in the sixth inning, shutting the door and allowing a 12-8 comeback win. Lee had three strikeouts in four innings, allowing just one hit. For the week, she struck out 15 in 16 IP, allowed just eight hits and walking only one.

The Lady Bulldogs return to action Friday in the Chipola Community College Tournament. They play Georgia Military at 12:30 p.m. and Snead State at 3 p.m.
