Long-time Pearl River Community College men's basketball coach Richard Mathis is no longer at the school.
PRCC Director of Public Relations Chuck Abadie said Mathis took a medical leave of absence prior to the holidays and plans to retire once the season is over. He declined to go into further detail.
"Coach Mathis had a great career at Pearl River and we were tremendously pleased with the job he did as coach," Abadie said.
He said assistant coach Chris Oney has been elevated to interim coach.
The move comes in the midst of a successful season for the Wildcats. Mathis, a PRCC Hall of Fame inductee, had coached the Wildcats to a 7-3 overall record. PRCC, the two-time defending MACJC State Tournament champion, is tied with Gulf Coast atop the South Division at 2-0.
"I like my team," Mathis said in a preseason release. "If we get everybody back and on the same page, I think we're going to have a successful year."
During his 24 seasons at PRCC, Mathis led the Wildcats to seven MACJC State Championships.
PRCC hosted Mississippi Delta on Thursday.
