PERKINSTON -- Two Mississippi Gulf Coast baseball players signed scholarships with Delta State on Wednesday.

Justin Nussbaum and Brian Lane will be playing for the Statesmen after they complete their Bulldogs careers this spring.

Nussbaum, a 5-foot-8, 165-pound shortstop from Mandeville, La., batted .337 during his freshman season. He had one home run and drove in 10 runs.

"He's athletic and really good at shortstop," Gulf Coast coach Rodney Batts said. "He's a guy you can count on to make the routine plays. Offensively, he's a contact-oriented guy. You can do a lot with him. He plays the short game really well."

Lane, a 5-foot-10, 210-pound catcher from Spanish Fort, Ala., batted .357 for the Bulldogs last year. He had nine doubles and 13 RBI.

"Brian is as good a catcher as there is in this league," Batts said. "He's a wall back there behind the plate. Nothing gets by him. He's a middle-of-the-order hitter with some juice in his bat."
